Pep talks - On many occassions I have passed the full contingent of a business stood outside in ranks recieving a pep talk! But it is a pep talk with a difference and it can make you snigger or outright hoot especially when you see 3 or 4 chefs with their foot high hats dressed in their whites doing aerobics and the twist! Evidently the management feels this must be what we in the west term as 'bonding' session, because they wheel everyone out for this inspirational speech and exercise. The funny thing is they give the bull horn or micro phone to the tinyest girl to shout out the instructions. Funniest one was a hairdressers emptied onto the street to be drilled like soldiers and to watch all the bouffont haired lads marching in time and doing left and right turns was hilarious. the drill sargeant was the manager or owner. The fashion for boys here is to bouffont the hair to the max the higher the more outlandish the style the more street cred, I guess.

Quque or not to quque [cue]- Chinese don't quque in lines its a mad rush for any doorway that opens and that includes the bus in a big way. Don't expect to hear excuse me or get an apology if you get elbowed in the back or your shoe trodden on, but I have noticed they are not to keen to have me step on their tredders. But surpisingly on the bus once you've got on seats will be offered up to pregnant ladies and those with children and older folk. I sometimes get offered a seat because I'm a white face, but I decline. My wife has assured me it is not because of my age that I am being offered the seat....
In a supermarket they will quque at checkouts but at weighing stations for fresh veg be prepared to be worked out of the way. Stand your ground and even shout at them in English if you don't speak enought Chinese, they soon go back because you have caused them to be looked at and they are loosing face in front of everyone. If you want to really upset them point at the person and that can get them going! Therefore pointing is considered impolite. Otherwise your trip to the supermarket is a free for all and chaotic - I love it! Be prepared for lots of people like you have never seen before.
No one here says sorry for bumping into you I guess they just accept it as normal and don't waste time on niceties, so for any sensitive Brits just suck it up and deal with it because you ain't going to change it, but I still excuse myself and be as polite and I'm sometimes looked at like I have 2 heads. As I keep saying you will stand out on the street as there is no one else here in great numbers from the west, so familiar faces are seldom seen. Luckily the buses in Xiamen are air conditioned and can be quite a treat if you get on a less crowded one. And deoderant here is expensive so be prepared for a few whiffs of BO. Though the Chinese are a clean people [always washing] more than you may expect, my wife is so house proud she makes my previous wife look like a slob and she was house proud. All the malls are air conditioned as are the restaurants and franchises like Pizza Hut, Kfc and Mcdonalds, and most establishments where you will spend a bit of time. You will see rats at any time of the day so don't jump out of your skin if one scurries out in front of you, it does happen. I guess it's no different than the plague of bloody foxes we have living in our towns and cities in England.

  Rituals and making an impression

Romance isn’t dead in China it is just done in a different way. When eating a meal together you should remember to feed your partner food from your plate i.e. put a tasty morsel of meat or choice vegetable in your chopstick and offer it to your lady’s mouth – she will eat it from your sticks. You can also place the titbit in her plate this is also a normal practice. But make sure it is a nice piece of food and not some rubbish you can’t stomach! This shows that you care and are prepared to give the best things that you have chosen from the varied food served on the table. Sharing food like this is considered a done thing between couples and you should offer this food often during the meal, she may decline when she is ready but keep trying, it is a kind of ritual. She will be doing the same thing to you so don’t worry you won’t starve! If in other company only do these perhaps a few times, it also shows other people that you care about your lady. You read often about how the girls say they can cook, well yes they can if it is traditional Chinese fair and not something from a western cookbook. I know of some guys who can take to eating all the various dishes with great gusto, but I am afraid I’m one of the non-adventurous types who can get passed eating frogs [not the legs but the whole amphibian just popped into your mouth and once chewed the bones are spit out]. I just can’t get passed the bones!
Do yourself a big favour and I mean this in the best way: don’t tell your new lady about your past women and conquests!! Just keep it to your marriages and keep it simple. I’m not advocating lying but you will not regret omitting a few details if you have a somewhat checkered past with women. They don’t look too kindly on promiscuous wonton behaviour and think you are a slut if you have slept around.
Basically, the Chinese women will obsess about your past and it shows them that you may be unfaithful if you have done more than a little flirting. It’s one obstacle you want to avoid, they can’t see your side of just saying that is in the past and it is many years ago. To them it is as if you are still that wanna be Casanova. I know this may sound incredible to men of our age who probably can’t even remember our party days of the 60’s and 70’s but to them it is an unknown area they are not familiar with and it may well remind them of their Chinese ex-husband’s ways.
I still think that if a man has got the time and inclination he could well come here on his volition and meet a woman of this dreams. Chinese women have their own dress sense and I can only define it as modern chic and slight classy with a tarty edge. With that said you have got to be on your guard not to turn your head while out with your lady, they have a keen radar like none I have ever encountered before for spotting your slight indiscretions. I think that all boils down to this face thing. It seems that the women are more guided by this and are always looking for ways either to take another woman’s face or to save their own. The young Chinese teachers I work with tell me this is starting to wain slightly with the younger generation but it is still ingrained in society as a whole. It makes the culture definitely unique.
