The Lakers weren't blown out, but questions about Bryant's decision-making and Brown's job security will be inevitable. Brown is in the first year of a four-year, $20 million deal.
Not only must Los Angeles hold serve at home, but to have a shot at coming from behind they must win in Oklahoma City, where they're now 0-3 this season.
The Lakers were able to pound Oklahoma City inside with 7-footers Bynum and Gasol with great success as Brown chose to work his offense from the inside-out.
Brown, a disciple of San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, is noted as a defensive coach and already has come under fire for his offense.
Though the Lakers won NBA championships from 2009 and 2010, owner Jerry Buss wanted the team to move away from then-coach Phil Jackson's triangle offense and be more entertaining.
That hasn't quite happened. Even though Brown led the Lakers to a third-place finish in the Western Conference, there was a Jan. 5-28 stretch when they failed to reach 100 points in 13 consecutive games. They were 7-6.
They were being threatened for the Pacific Division title by the Los Angeles Clippers, their Staples Center co-tenant. Suddenly, the more popular team in town had Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
But the Lakers persevered. They won the division by one game, including a 113-108 win vs. the Clippers on April 4 that also gave them the tiebreaker. They won the season series 2-1.
Los Angeles led the Denver Nuggets 3-1 in a first-round series but lost Game 6 by 17 points and had to go the distance.
Sometimes, Bynum or Gasol or both don't show up, as in that Game 6 when they combined for just 14 points. Then they put away the Nuggets in Game 7 with a combined 39 points and 35 rebounds.
They no longer have a versatile big man such as Lamar Odom, who was traded before the season, to pick up the slack.
Still, Brown had the right plan and the Lakers executed it well for 46 minutes. But in the end a loss is a loss, whether by 29 or two.
